Las Vegas has a long tradition of pulling out all the stops for Mexican Independence Day, due in equal parts to our valley’s large Mexican-American population and our city’s popularity as a tourist destination for both Mexican nationals and Mexican-Americans.

Musical venues compete to host the largest collection of Latin music artists over the holiday weekend, while fight promoters have a tradition of booking top talent that dates back to the 1990s. (Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez all fought major bouts in Las Vegas over Mexican Independence Day Weekend.) And of course, many restaurants are offering great deals on drinks and specialty dishes that showcase Mexican traditions infused with our city’s inimitable flair.

This year’s celebrations will be bigger than ever on all fronts. And whether you’re here to watch Carín León, Grupo Duelo or Canelo Álvarez, or just to have a fantastic party, you’re going to get hungry (and probably thirsty). When that happens, make sure to check out these spots in Vegas for Mexican Independence Day weekend.

On the Strip

The Cosmopolitan

The Cosmopolitan’s high-energy party spot Amaya Modern Mexican feels like a celebration every night. And they’ll kick it into high gear at their Independence Day celebration on Tuesday the 16th. From the start of dinner service at 4 p.m., guests will enjoy dancers, fire performers, a DJ and a pair of great drink specials. Try a Prickly Pear Royale (tequila, prickly pear, cucumber, black pepper, honey and lemon) for $24. Or settle in for two hours of bottomless Don Julio margaritas for $36 per person.

Excalibur

TAP Sports Bar will be offering food and beverage specials like chicken taquitos, cochinita pibil and cajeta molten chocolate cake, from Saturday September 13 through Monday September 15. The brand new Alebrijes by Chef Paco in Neonopolis will be offering specials from Friday through Sunday. Happy Hour (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.) and Reverse Happy Hour (10 p.m. to midnight) will feature $7 margaritas, $5 draft beer, and small plates like panuchos, chapulines (grasshoppers), taquitos, quesadillas, tostaditas, pozole, Caesar salad and flan for $10 each.  They’ll also have a Latin DJ all weekend, and live music from midnight to 3 a.m. on Saturday night.

Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road

Más Por Favor Taqueria y Tequila

You may be surprised to learn that Las Vegas’ “Chinatown” is actually home to restaurants and bars reflecting quite a few different cultures. One of the best examples is Más Por Favor – a small street taco storefront with a festive speakeasy in the rear. If you’re simply hungry, order a taco at the counter. For the real party, ask the cashier about “tonight’s delight,” to be escorted into the back. Their usual Taco Tuesdays promotion, with a DJ, $3 tacos and $2 margaritas, will be happening on the 16th. And the 14th will mark the second edition of their Secret Sundays LGBTQ night.

West Side

Durango Resort

The Durango’s Mijo Modern Mexican will host a party on Tuesday with dancers, fire performers, a DJ and both food and drink specials from 6 to 9 p.m. And you really can’t beat their offer of unlimited tacos and margaritas for $36. But if you want to mix it up a bit, you can also visit their attached speakeasy, Wax Rabbit, which will be offering a pair of specialty cocktails made with Pantalones tequila for $18 apiece.

Milpa

Some of the best tortillas in Las Vegas are made by two-time James Beard Award semifinalist DJ Flores, at his tiny West Valley shop, Milpa. On Tuesday the 16th, he’ll expand the operation a little to create a party in the parking lot, with a taco stand, music and margaritas.

East Side

Green Valley Ranch

The décor at Borracha Mexican Cantina in Green Valley Ranch has a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) vibe and décor. But they also know how to get into an Independence Day groove, as evidenced by the party they’re throwing from 4 to 10 p.m. on the holiday. It will begin with a Happy Hour from 4:00 to 6:00, followed by a live mariachi band from 6:00 to 8:00, and DJ Skye on the turntables from 8:00 until closing. And you can get unlimited margaritas, tequila and tacos (six different types) for just $32.

Virgin Hotel Las Vegas

The Theater at the Virgin Hotels has Latin artists booked every night of the holiday weekend, with Fey on Friday, Brincos Dieras on Saturday, Edith Marquez on Sunday and Jesse and Joy on Monday. When you get hungry, you can enjoy the specials they’re rolling out for the entire month of September: $5 tacos at Lucia Mexican Grill; $5 Jose Cuervo shots at Lucia and all casino bars; and  $5 live blackjack.  And if you’re looking for some Mexican flavors earlier in the day, try Lucia’s brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, featuring live entertainment and bottomless mimosas.
