The Event

It's the 1950s. Mark Rothko has made a worldwide name for himself as a master abstract expressionist by painting huge blocks of color on giant canvases that take viewers through deep emotional journeys. But while Rothko lectures his assistant about the truths of art and the ideals of artisanry, day after day, month after month, it becomes clear that Rothko may be losing his touch. From the first scene to the last, master and apprentice grapple with hypocrisy, integrity, and even the meaning of their lives until a heart-stopping final stroke completes a metamorphosis for them both, and a master finally decides between the vision of his viewers...and his own.
